Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal: What's the Difference?
After a tree comes down, the stump is still there — and "get rid of it" can mean two very different jobs. Grinding chews the stump down below ground level; full removal digs the whole thing out, roots and all. Here is how they compare on cost, mess, yard impact, and replanting, so you pick the right one the first time.
What stump grinding does
A grinder chews the stump down 6–12 inches below grade, turning it into chips. The hole is backfilled with those chips, and the spot is left ready for sod or planting — usually the same visit as your tree removal, or as a standalone job. Small stumps typically start around $100–$150; large or multiple stumps are quoted free on site. These are typical Fresno ranges, not a quote — final pricing is set in the contractor's written quote.
What grinding does not do: it does not take out the root system. The main roots stay underground and decay over time, which is fine for lawn or a garden bed but matters if you plan to build or replant in the exact same spot.
What full stump removal does
Full removal excavates the entire stump plus the root ball — digging, cutting, and hauling away a large mass of wood and soil. It leaves a much bigger hole, which then needs clean fill and regrading, and it usually costs more and takes longer than grinding because of the excavation and disposal involved.
What you get for that: a truly clear spot. No decaying roots, no regrowth from root suckers, and no surprises if you later dig footings, a patio, or a driveway through the area.
Side by side
| Stump grinding | Full stump removal | |
|---|---|---|
| What happens | Stump ground 6–12 inches below grade; chips backfill the hole | Whole stump and root ball dug out and hauled away |
| Typical cost | Lower; small stumps typically around $100–$150 | Higher; excavation and disposal add labor and hauling |
| Time on site | Often under an hour for a single stump | Longer, sometimes a half-day or more for large root balls |
| Mess and yard impact | Chips contained to the stump area; lawn recovers quickly | Large hole, disturbed soil, needs fill and regrading |
| Roots left behind | Yes — they decay underground over time | No — the root ball is gone |
| Replanting | Fine for sod or a garden bed; plant a new tree nearby, not in the same hole | Ready to replant or build in the same spot once filled and settled |

When each one makes sense
Choose grinding for most Fresno yards: the stump is in a lawn or bed, you want sod or planting over it, and nothing structural will go in that spot. It is faster, cheaper, and leaves the yard usable the same day. Grinding is also the right call when the stump sits near utilities, sidewalks, or a foundation where digging a root ball out would risk damage.
Choose full removal when you plan to build, pave, or replant in the exact spot; when the stump keeps sending up suckers; or when a future project — a patio, a driveway extension, a new tree in the same hole — needs genuinely clear ground. If you are unsure which category your spot falls into, the on-site visit settles it: the contractor can see the roots, the utilities, and what you plan to put there.
